Description

History has depicted the black male as an object undeserving of the liberties that are afforded to citizens of America. He has been denied the bare essentials needed to ensure his productivity within society. Access to the halls of the academy was delayed in an attempt to prevent him from understanding the revelatory power of an untold story. This session seeks to provide young black males with the skills necessary to succeed in and outside of the classroom. Attendees will be challenged to define who they are and conceptualize their own perspective of who the black male can become. By actively engaging in peer dialogue, the “single-story” that is often told will be unlocked and attendees will be empowered through the development of an action plan to reconsider the current draft of HIStory.

It is unfortunate that many black males have experienced moments of isolation, being singled-out, and feeling pressured to “represent” for the entire race. Being faced with these harsh daily realities can be somewhat overwhelming when added to the equation for becoming successful. Our collective responsibility is to remind future generations of the importance of a trained mind which will better prepare them for the inevitable life obstacles. The time is now that we move beyond the barriers and help our young men in their efforts to write a HIStory that will enlighten others for years to come.

Keywords: black male, education, race, history, student, success, high school, college, behavior, support
