Abstract
Industry today thrives off of competition; everybody wants their product to be the best. Across almost every field of manufacturing and design, there is a pattern of factors that companies strive for when producing their specialized products. The most effective companies can create a commodity that is relatively inexpensive, easy to manufacture, and has the ability to meet high standards. As engineers, it is ingrained in us that there is always room for improvement, and that we have been given the tools to make it happen.
When evaluating what needed to be improved in our daily lives, the SAE Zips Baja team came to mind. Baja SAE is an engineering competition in which students design, manufacture and compete with off-road vehicles. To help the Zips Baja team improve their vehicle, we planned to design and fabricate a new steering wheel with the hopes of replacing their old model. The team’s current steering wheel is expensive and has multiple difficult tasks involved within the manufacturing process. The goal of our project is to design a new steering wheel that satisfies the driver’s needs while minimizing the cost of manufacturing and creating a simplified fabrication process. We want to make a wheel that is not only durable but comfortable for the driver, so they have the best possible chance of showing the competition how well the Zips Baja vehicle can perform.
