Abstract

Beginning in about 2018, The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce partnered with the Ohio Department of Higher Education and the Ohio Math Initiative to create a mathematics transition course to provide high school students with a class that could prepare them for a college entry-level mathematics course if they had not previously earned a remediation-free score. This course was titled “Mathematical Modeling and Reasoning” and has since been named, “Advanced Quantitative Reasoning” (AQR) and has become an Algebra II equivalent course where students can receive their final math credit to graduate. This study looked to compare students in Algebra II and students in Advanced Quantitative Reasoning to discover if the two classes are similar and can be considered equivalent courses. This study focused on a group of 56 students from a rural school in Northeast Ohio and their student opinion through an attitudinal study of high school students on mathematics and the courses themselves along with a comparison of student scores on a growth vs fixed mindset quiz to compare how students’ mindsets are influenced by the classes they are in. Along with the survey, an interview was conducted with the Math Consultant and ODE Trainer who is in charge of the training for this course to understand more about why the course was developed and how it is an Algebra II equivalent. Descriptive Statistics were used to describe students’ mindsets and attitudes towards mathematics based on the results of the surveys.
