Abstract

Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions to Earth's atmosphere have increased rapidly in recent decades largely due to growing fossil fuel use in human-led activities The research contained in this proposal assesses a way to capture CO2 concentration in the atmosphere. The project studies the effectiveness of a vacuum swing adsorption (VSA) process for capture of CO2 from air. CO2 will first be adsorbed by introducing an amine sorbent to a CO2-rich environment for a predetermined period. The amine sorbent will be placed in a VSA unit that will operate at the desorption stage. The sorbent will then be sent to a second VSA unit that will be operated under a vacuum to produce the desorption stage. This research will provide insight to a low-energy CO2 capture process that uses low regeneration-energy sorbents and efficient vacuum processes. Once an optimal setup for capture and desorption are determined, industrial feasibility will be considered via an economic analysis. This project is a joint project and will be completed by Brock Haas (bmh143@uakron.edu) and Payton Taylor (prt15@uakron.edu). Brock's specific role in this project is the preparation and optimization of high density, low energy CO2 sorbents and analyzing the experimental data. Payton will be responsible for the creation of the VSA units and also analyzing the data from the experimental trials.
