The Ohio Digital Network (ODN) is a Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) service hub. DPLA seeks to connect people to the riches within America’s cultural heritage institutions that are free and immediately accessible. To do so, DPLA aggregates over 35,000,000 metadata records of digital items found in libraries and museums from across the United States in one easy to find portal at dp.la. All items found in DPLA are free to view, and link back to the original provider’s website, providing discoverability for small libraries’ rich collections alongside collections of well-known cultural heritage institutions such as the Getty, Smithsonian Museums, the Library of Congress and many more.
The Ohio Digital Network harvests metadata from libraries and museums across Ohio to be republished and discoverable in DPLA. Since 2018, ODN has harvested metadata of over 200,000 items from 19 Ohio institutions. This presentation will discuss the behind the scenes magic of metadata that make this process possible. Penelope Shumaker (State Library of Ohio), Metadata Librarian for the Ohio Digital Network, will discuss the Metadata Application Profile of the Ohio Digital Network, and the harvest process for metadata records. John Dewees (Toledo Lucas County Public Library), Ginnie Dressler (Kent State University), and Adam Wanter (MidPointe Library System) will describe the process as metadata contributors and will discuss common metadata remediations for contributors of ODN, such as applying specific rights statements and other required fields.
