Abstract

In this literature review, the current understanding and assessment of conduct disorder will be examined with the intention of finding areas in need of future research. The importance of how conduct disorder develops with individuals, the comorbidities associated with the disorder, and the ways in which conduct disorder is assessed will be the focal point for this review. In particular, this review explores how the development of conduct disorder is connected with the long-term outcomes and the ways in which the interaction of co-occurring disorders can impact the course of this condition. Existing research on conduct disorder has gaps that need to be filled in order to improve the lives of individuals living with this disorder and those around them. The existing assessment tools for evaluating individuals with conduct disorder lack in several critical ways. These include the potential for bias, the lack of specificity when examining conduct disorder in terms of the developmental course of a child or adolescent, and the lack of cultural sensitivity that is present within the existing assessment tools and practices.
