Abstract
This paper will discuss the design and testing of prototype less-lethal ammunitions based on a novel butyl-based composite. Existing less-lethal ammunition based on EPDM, SBR and natural rubber were analyzed and tested for energy transfer and blunt impact causing treatable injuries. 12 and 20 gauge, and 9 mm ammunition were designed and manufactured using a novel butyl composite. The new less-lethal ammunition were shown to be superior compared with existing less-lethal ammunition in terms of energy transfer, blunt impact and accuracy. The dynamic mechanical properties of the new composite were investigated and will be discussed, in comparison with existing less-lethal ammunition.
