Black males face many challenges to their survival; as a result, the concept of Thug Life was born. Tupac Shakur, often credited for this term, is someone with whom many inner city youth can relate. He stated, “I didn’t create Thug Life, I diagnosed it.” This engaging session will address what unique characteristics in Black males Tupac identified as Thug Life. Participants will gain understanding of how and why Thug Life is expressed in young Black males. This concept is often misunderstood and seen as an antisocial attitude, however, Thug Life is something much more adaptive and valuable. Some call it delinquent behavior, while others call it survival. So, where does this concept come from, and why does it have such a bad rep? What does Thug Life look like? What can Thug Life teach us about ourselves? How do we empower ourselves against all odds? This unique perspective of Thug Life will answer all of these questions and more.
