Evaluation of Some Critical Parameters in Ultrasonic Welding of Thermoplastics

Erol Sancaktar, The University of Akron

Abstract

Ultrasonic welding of NORYL thermoplastics is performed and analyzed. The orthogonal test method with linear analysis is used to find the optimal welding parameters. The horn down speed is varied to assess indirectly the effect of contact force during weld. The results reveal that a tight contact of weld surfaces during welding and hold time is important for high strength weld. Sandwiched weld structure is also studied. It seems that sandwiched structure can be used to obtain further information on energy transmission and transformation for ultrasonic welding. This structure is also though to have possible application for welding thermoplastic and thermoset plastic components.
