Abstract

Ballet is an art form that is both archaic and innovative, elitist and accessible, and it has built up a community around itself that is constantly making their feelings on these subjects heard. This paper discusses some trends in the social documentation of ballet. It describes the historical context of dance documentation, considers the distinction between collecting and documenting, and speculates on the future of dance documentation.
