Abstract
Modern technology has been proven to be present in various fields, and this phenomenon interests many organizations to benefit from sustainability and stability, including what contributes to creating a healthy and safe living environment for the people. One of the museums in Indonesia has been applying the technology: Museum Universitas Gadjah Mada (Gajah Mada University) or Museum UGM in Yogjakarta. The museum has recently launched QR Code Museum Automatic Guiding Plus (UGM QR Code), a revolutionary technology, containing navigation, guidance, and narration about the collections on display using a QR Code scanner on a smartphone. This technology gives visitors access to short descriptions of the collections and pertinent information about the museum’s collection such as research, photos, and books.
Digitalization of the collection is an attempt by the museum to engage with the visitors through technology. The visitors’ engagement can be developed when the visitors have positive experiences in terms of information retrieval using the technology. From the museum communication perspective by Yudhawasthi, at least a museum has to create four experiences to enhance connectivity: Spiritual, Educational, Recreational, and Ukhuwah (SERU). It means that all the digitalized formats of the collections in this process should be felt, absorbed, and reflected as a positive experience. Can the visitors have a SERU experience when they use the technology? With this implementation, The Museum UGM tries to interpret the collections with all aspects as a resource center, managing all kinds of documents. Can the visitors recognize the digitalized formats as informational (mental), material (physical), and communicational (social)? From a document perspective, this concept is introduced by Niels Windfeld Lund as a complementarity document. With complementarity, we can recognize that it is more than just a document's content contributing to its meaning. This paper aims to map the SERU experience of the visitors when they use the digitalized formats of collections and recognize the complementarity aspects of the document from the visitors’ perspective.
This research used a quantitative approach in the form of a survey. The instrument used was a questionnaire designed to map SERU dimensions and aspects of complementarity. The sampling technique was accidental sampling. The result shows that the UGM QR Code fulfills the elements of a document and shows all the complementarity aspects of a document. From the museum communication concept, the UGM QR Code is identified to trigger the respondents' Spiritual, Educational, and Recreational experiences. However, there was a lack of Ukhuwah experience felt by the respondents.
